Back when Fashion was Fashion.....

Here's some photos I found of the John Bishop Doyle women's clothing store in the 1950's. I wish that some stores that shall remain nameless (their initials are Nordstrom) would have taken a lesson from their forebearers on what Glamour is. But then again, I don't really think people - except for a very few, rarified people, who don't live in Seattle, and certainly don't shop at Nordstrom - would know how to handle themselves in a place like this, since we've become so casual as a society (which is not necessarily a bad thing). The only places in town that come even remotely close are St. John and Jerri Rice.

John Doyle Bishop morphed into Ruth Hill, which is now on the arcade level of the Olympic Hotel. I used to handle their trunk shows back in the day, but it was nowhere near as glam as this. At the time these pictures were taken, I believe they were in the Fifth Avenue Theatre building.

Anyway, I think these pictures speak for themselves. If I had a store, it would look just like this, and have Sylvia O. Stayformore as the hostess.

Why, they are in the back room, dear.... The way it worked was that models would come out wearing the high fashion outfits, the lady would say "Ooooo! I want that one!!! and the customer and saleslady, along with a fitter, would go back to the dressing room and fit her into a version of the outfit. It was quite a couture experience.

But you can see some hats in the first picture!

    I couldn't help it.

Oh I would definately work there.

Now I can review the latest gowns from my dressing room on the top level of the boat house and choose online and have it delivered to my door by "my people". Not so bad.

I do love the look though.

Sylvia, Catalina here....How are you darling?

I had no idea that working at THAT STORE had coarsened you so! You are totally missing the point of the experience. Shopping is all about SEEING and BEING SEEN - not about huddling over some computer ordering emporia.

Didn't your years on the ZCMI Fashion Board teach you ANYTHING?

dan, our former neighbor Claudia Cannon (atop queen anne) is a saleslady at Ruth Hill and used to sell gloves at Frederick & Nelson... she is always the best-dressed on the 3/4 bus.. we really must get you two together sometime for a proper cocktail.
